Hi all

I have a choice to make - 10spd Dura Ace 7970 Di2 or 11spd Ultegra R8000 mechanical - which one to choose, and why??

Not sure of any issues with the Di2, but if all is right, I would go Dura Ace Di2. No more setting of gears, trim adjustments, just perfect shifts everytime

I dont have any issues with my Di2, except that the largest I can go on the rear is 27. On the Ultegra, I can have up to 34, although I'd be running a 30. I live in a super hilly area... Plus, I'd have 11 instead of 10 on the back...

DieselnDust, why?

Because more is always better!

More gears, more range, smaller hops between gear will give a better riding experience.

Also, what is making you consider a 10sp electronic shifter over an 11sp mechanical - the name (Dura Ace) or the nice electronic idea? The 7970 is two generations older than the Ultegra R8000. Which means any new technology that had existed in that series of Dura Ace has already filtered down to the Ultegra (bar the electronic bits), as well as technology from the Dura Ace generation in between the 7970 and the latest iteration. So the R8000 is a better groupset than the Dura Ace 7900 series, apart from it not being electronic

I dont actually know what is making me consider the DA over Ultegra. I think perhaps its both options - DA as well as electronic, even though it is 2 generations ago.

But then looking at the Ultegra, it just looks so much damn nicer!!, AND it has an extra gear!!

DA7970 is the previous gen Di ad its not without its faults

Ultegra R8000 is as good as DA 9100 mechanical and doesn't come with the admin of battery charging, battery dying for o reason connections breaking.

I can downshift faster and jst as accurate as the electronic systems.

The gearing choice with R8000 is broader,

the caliper brakes are stiffer and have much more bite than the DA7900 series calipers.

The shape of the R8000 hoods is much better than the DA 7970.

Buy the DA7970 at you peril. I think its limited to a 25T cassette sprocket as well.

Di2 DA9070 and R6970 Ultegra is where you want to start your electronic journey. Leave the 10speed stuff on the shelf. its just problems you don't want.

but its your money, you chose

I have both already, just picked up the Di2 today, from a scrap bin, of all places! Everything is in perfect order, and works 100%.... just trying to decide which to run on the race bike, and which to run on the training bike. I agree with pretty much everything you've said about the Di2 system, so I guess I'll be sticking to Ultegra!

Thanks for the input!

Ultegra mechanical, dura ace prices are ridiculous!

But why limit yourself to these 2?

I would suggest Ulegra Di2, maybe with a compact group set if you need better climbing options

Ultegra 8000 is great.

I also have Dura Ace 9100 and there isn't much difference in the 2.

Braking on DA is better by some margin, but shifting etc is very close.

I had Di2, sold the bike and had no regrets.

Was sceptical initially but really enjoying electronic.

Is it worlds apart from mechanical.?

Probably not, but well worth trying if one gets the opportunity on the most recent iterations.

Ultegra for sure.

Is have the R8000 groupset on both bikes, pretty much flawless if you maintain is properly (ie. cleaning).

I have just got the Ultegra - the mechanic disk version was nearly half price at Merlin Cycles.

Super comfy hoods and butter smooth shifts, always spot on.

Brakes were a bit swalky at first, but once they were worn in, are great and powerful.
