Scott Spark - Pivot screw replacement

Recommended Posts

Hi Guys,

Need some assistance please, I have a 2020 Scott Spark 950.

I was doing a once over when washing my bike and noticed what seemed to be a loose pivot screw, I grabbed the torque wrench and tried to tighten it, without even reaching 10nm the screw starting spinning around.

So not sure if I broke it or if it was over tightened from the start but need a new one.

Where will I be able to source?

Apparently on some bikes or runs of bolts, that NM print is the bolt limit, not the normal torque settings... Contact Scott dealers and see what's going on.

Contact Mellow Velo at Broadacres center.  They have a magic box of Scott parts.  If you are fortunate you will not have to buy the full pivot kit.

Thanks David, will contact them, fingers crossed!

They're part of a full kit, but any LBS who does pivots on a regular basis should have spares knocking around.

Thanks for the assistance to all who posted.

I have 2 options, full pivot kit at R1200.00 and I can pick up myself or the one bolt needed at R150.00+shipping.

Not sure if these parts are prone to breakage, then I can just as well buy the entire kit.

You say it is a 2020 bike - surely it should be a warranty issue ???

Recommended torques are usually what's printed, but if in doubt check the service manual.

Too tight and it breaks, too loose and it falls apart, but even with max torques there should be a safety factor.

Shared because I ran into this on a bike of my own. Tightened pivot bolt to printed torque using a wrench, snapped the bolt. Spoke to manufacturer and they confirmed wrong figured were printed. Recommended torque was 4nm, printed value was 10nm.

Bolt replaced by the manufacturer.

Jirr, I'd flippen hope so...

But in this case it's a misprint, not the recommended vs max torque. If it says 10Nm on the bolt, that's what it gets tightened to. Otherwise why bother with laser engraving?

Why is it that these Scott bolts are still made this crappy.

These things break on a weekly basis

Incremental savings are how you make a sub 10kg full sus.

There will inevitably be casualties along the way.

Hahaha I know right?

I guess the gist should have been - just cause it's been put on a part, doesn't mean mistakes can't be made... Apparently this fault was communicated to dealers but it leaves Joe DIY out to dry... I don't know Scott bikes at all, but figure if the bolt breaks at the printed torque, the manufacturer might be at fault before he shells out for a new pivot set.

It sucks that the guys at BOLT don't make mtb bolt kits.

For the mx bikes you can buy a spare bolt kit or track pack with all the spare odd sized bolts for your bike. Reckon they would make a killing with this.
