Focusspeed1 Posted August 15, 2020 Share Hi Hubbers, thinking of getting something new.. My bike is 7 yrs old... Alu. I do feel that im not getting out what im putting in. So, the thinking is definitely carbon and disc brakes?... Is that the way to go? Or should i hang on a bit and when disc becomes a bit more available and everyday- the rim brake bikes price should drop significantly? And just move lateral? Focusspeed1 Posted August 15, 2020 Share But woudnt it mayb be able to get rim much cheaper? Or dont you guys foresee the price to drop THAT much to justify lateral?.. My thoughts are definitely on disc tho.

What bikes are you looking and what sort of budget are you playing with ? I bought a rim brake bike because it was well priced, lighter and more simple (2019 model which was R20k cheaper and about 300g lighter than the 2020 disc model), but discs brakes are the way that many manufacturers are going. If something ever happened to the frame that required replacement in a few years, there is a possibility that there wont be rim brake models available and then the switch to discs will be an expensive operation. So brake performance aside, getting a disc brake bike will be future proof (until the next technology comes along). Focusspeed1 Posted August 15, 2020 Share Sooo... Im a "nor here, nor there" kind of rider(dont know if this makes any sense).. Not riding 100-120km on a Saturday with a group(might get there).. Currently just with 1 or 2 buddies like 60km 70km per ride... I do get the whole thing bout the carbon being stiffer etc had the emx1 few years back and was very Happy with it.. Then had to "downgrade" for financial reasons... So yes i do understand all the questions however, I do both mtb and road, but more road... And just want my next buy to be as mentioned earlier "future proof"? And is maintenance on disc brakes THAT EXPENSIVE? PS.. looking at Titan Valerian... Ticks all my boxes... OK future proofing will take you down the Disc brake route. The Valerian range does tick many boxes. Also consider a Cannondale CAAD12 or CAAD13 disc. They're alloy but with disc brke options too.just remember, disc brakes won't make you faster, they'd just be future proofing your bike to a degree. Captain Fastbastard Mayhem Posted August 15, 2020 Share Apart from bleeding, there's no additional cost to disc brakes over teh rim brakes. Likewise, you can use any rim you want with a disc-braked bike, but you HAVE to use a rim brake rim for rim brakes. Honestly, I'd go for discs over rim brakes any day of the week. Less susceptible to changes in conditions, carbon rims don't have to stand up to the heat on the braking surface (delamination, unless they're using proper resins and you're using proper pads) and so on. Chris_ Posted August 15, 2020 Share Only because I have just done so, I'd suggest buy a rockstar carbon frame, with rim brakes. The other plus is rim brake wheels are tumbling in price. I'm happy though to be a step behind the times if I'm honest, so the fact that you even mentioned future proof makes me think you should go disk. Focusspeed1 Posted August 15, 2020 Share Yea thanx for the feedback... But wot does future proof mean tho?... Lol... "be part of the biking look"? And not the actual ride... So yea that is also a thought that the rim wheels and frames might just drop, or have to.. Or you just keep the older one as an extra bike... potsandpedals Posted August 15, 2020 Share I ride the Valerian Pro, and my cycling has improved dramatically. Exactly where you were 12months ago. Yes im fitter, but first time on a disc/carbon full ultegra, it does make a difference. I've looked, and most other brands in this class are 10-20k more expensive. Some bits on the bike they skimped on imo, handlebar, saddle but those are small. You wont look back.
