HighRider Posted September 12, 2020 Share So I took my bike out today for the first time, we rode the Botteleray trails a bit and it was awesome, except for the pedals that came with the bicycle. My feet slipped off the pedals multiple times, once almost causing me to lose my manhood. I am not interested in cleats, I prefer normal pedals and my budget is R800 and below. Riding will always be on gravel, trails, single tracks and some small jumps etc Im in Cape Town Northern suburbs but dont mind having them couriered here.I tried using the search function to no avail. ChrisF Posted September 12, 2020 Share The Giant pedals are decent value for money. Entry level Shimano and Spezialised flat pedals are decent enough, but a bit above the budget you mentioned. Remembering the key to flat pedals is the combination of pedals AND shoes. The studs needs to grip the sole of the shoes, for this the shoes should : - have flat soles, raised arches means it does not make contact with all the studs - thus sole should be soft enough for the studs to grip into it, very hard plasticy soles slip over the studs Not many tekkies confirm to this. Skateboard shoes are the next option. 2FO, 5-10, and DC are some of the known cycling shoes. The shoes flex much less than tekkies and skateboard shoes, this helps, but is not as crytical as the first two. Wimmas Posted September 12, 2020 Share For your budget go Giant without a doubt. I have Shimano flat pedals which I have banged on so many rocks I cannot count and they are still fine. I would have recommended it but it is R1.2k + HighRider and ChrisF

Although I understand the concept of buy once cry once, this being my first bicycle, and my wallet not really allowing me, I will get the Giant pedals for now and then start putting some money aside for upgrading at a later stage. Bit off topic but as I said yesterday was the first time out on my own bike and it was amazing. I love the solitude and quietness, only hearing nature and bicycle parts moving. I got a bit cocky on the last single track on Botteleray trails, there between the trees, over the little bridge and then over the hump. I went over a bit quick and was 100% certain Im loosing a collar bone or a shoulder. I still have no idea how I didn't fall there but I wanted to go back up and just do it again. Thanks for all of the inputs and information, its really helping me enjoy the sport more. ChrisF

PhilipV Posted September 13, 2020 Share get cleatsThere is always that one guy. [emoji2357] I am not interested in cleats, I prefer normal pedals and my budget is R800 and below. .HighRider, better shoes and half a decent platform like the Giants will go a long way. Sneakers will grip well, but the softer sole will lead to foot pain along the way. WaynejG, Hairy, boxerulez and 2 others

WaynejG Posted September 13, 2020 Share Only advice I can offer is try and get pedals with sealed bearings. Cup and cone bearings are a pain to service and put back. tinmug
