FirstV8 Posted September 19, 2020 Share On Tuesday morning i left home at 8am going for my daily 47 km ride through the( residential 70% and 30% Industrial )areas . It was windless so i was hoping to do a PB on the route which has 520m of climbing on it and some good flat sections were you can really the hammer down ride at a 40 to 45kph on them . Going up the one climb which is a one way for me there is a section at the top which is badly potholed and has a lot of lose stone lying about . I had my head trying to navigate the pot holes and stones and when i looked up there was a VW Touareg stopped ahead of me crossing my path ( she was going into the company's driveway . So i turned to the left to go around the front of the car and i slipped on the lose stone and fell with my hip hitting the edge of the one pot hole . I estimate i was doing about 20kph when this happened . As i tried to move my left leg i realised i had either dislocated it or broken the femur . I used Namola to get the EMS out there and the response was fantastic . Three tow trucks , Two Emergency services and One security company with in 5 minutes of pressing the Assist Button " My son also being a paramedic got the call and came along at breakneck speed because its then legal to use lights and sirens . The lady in the VW was so traumatised that she did get out the car and when she got inside sat crying at her desk and sent an assistant down to come and talk to to me and see if i was ok . . The end result is that i had a fractured hip which ended up being a left hip replacement . Im off the bike for at least 6 to 8 weeks before i can attempt getting on my spinning bike and then eventually on my road and mtb to get back to my fitness im at now . On Saturday i did my first 100 km road ride at 31kph ave giving me a3Hr 14Min time . I was setting my goal for a sub 3hr 100km by end of October , well i suppose that's not be . So moral of the story " ride fast and hard , fall at speed and skip across the tar " The last pic is of my Zimmer 2020 Walker with 2,0 upgrades to carry my water bottle and other goody's. I also have my Garmin (circled ) on it to measure distance and time . The physio has warned me not to exceed 10kph .HAHA. The Ouzo Posted September 20, 2020 Share That was you?I saw a report saying cyclist was knocked off his bike in Tunney, with the same pic. Speedy recovery man, my mom has had 2 hip replacements. Both same hip. The older units had a 10 year life span hence the second replacement. Whilst she doesn’t do any sport she is extremely active in the garden and around the house, so all is not lost. Wishing you the best Oom. Keep us updated. FirstV8 and Dirkitech
Chris_ Posted September 20, 2020 Share Wow that's bad luck V8, sorry man. Hip replacements are incredible things though, you'll be up and on the move in no time. Also, well done to the Namola response team, I've seen adverts for it and it may be something worth considering now.

CAAD4 Posted September 20, 2020 Share All the best for a speedy recovery. I've just bought my daughter the Namola remote, as a backup for her, as she is a Type one Diabetic. It's seems to be a fantastic device and service. Dirkitech

tinmug Posted September 20, 2020 Share Well, you could argue it was a PB (of sorts). Sorry to hear that, and truly hope you heal up soon. And phew ... 40-45 km/h is pretty impressive ... my legs go blurry when I reached 30 km/h.
gummibear Posted September 20, 2020 Share Also saw the pic in the interwebs. Heal up soon [emoji106][emoji106]
TyronLab Posted September 21, 2020 Share That sucks man! Don't push too hard too soon, a week or two of extra recovery is worth a buttload more than a week or two of training in the long term. Also, garmin and water bottle mounted on a zimmer! What a badass. FirstV8
Bateleur1 Posted September 21, 2020 Share Hope you heal well. My wife had an accident two years ago at about 25km/h. End result:Shattered helmetConcussionSlight bleeding on the brainBroken elbowChopper ride to one of Germanies top Emergencies clinics (she remembers nothing of the chopper ride) Low speed crashes are in now way "innocent" FirstV8
Long Wheel Base Posted September 21, 2020 Share Eina, heal up soon and do the rehab properly!!!!!! To add to the above about low speed accidents. I lost a friend in 2008. She went to Thailand right after finishing matric and decided to hire a scooter. She had never ridden one before and got on the scooter and it fell over, she hit her head on the pavement and passed away in Thailand. Obviously lots of ifs and buts and and and but at the end of the day she passed away. Geared
cfcjim Posted September 21, 2020 Share Good luck with the recovery. It's a lot quicker than you realise.I've had a fake hip for five and a half years. It's still fine. But, I stopped MTB once I was back on the bike. Just in case.
