Recommended Posts

Hi guys I need help choosing a ds bike up to 40k mainly for xc and trail riding around Cape Town.

My focus is more on Specialized and Trek. I don't know what else so maybe you guys can give me some advise on bikes but not older than 2 years new or used. I can probably go up to 45k max. Thanx in advance.

Lots to consider

You want new you can go Titan cypher,Pyga hyrax,Norco Fluid, silverback stratos,Spez stumpjumper (new one will be released probably November).Trek recently had entry model fuels for R39k.

Do you want 100mm fork travel or 100mm+?

Twin shock lockout system or doesnt matter?

Dropper post is vital ensure it has or allow budget for it.

Got a decent budget, google the bikes you think look the nicest to you and then read up about them.

Try to go test ride all the bikes you interested in, will do wonders in helping to decide.

Silverback Stratos AL 1 is very well specc'd and goes for around R40k new and has 120mm travel, so a good mix between XC and trail.

If you want to go new Spez or Trek you will get very entry level components.

Titan also has a few well specc'd bikes in that price range but I am not sure about weight as they do not state it anywhere as far as I know.

Why not rather look ay a Chinese frame (Most are anyway, look how well Willie does with Adrenaline)

You can land a good frame with a shock for 10 to 12K ZAR build everything over and you are done. I want to do this but currently don't have the 12K

Don't write any brands off and give them all a go. When I started looking at bikes the consensus was "stay away from Spez". I nearly gave the brand a complete miss. Running out of options I popped into a Spez store and arranged a test bike for a weekend. Sold! Never looked back. You know immediately when the bike suits you.

Test rides are mandatory!

True XC and trail are very different bikes.

But there are some that tick both boxes in some way.

Titan 120mm is one. With a carbon frame in your price range.

Components are low end but you can easily upgrade later.

Pyga stage or max. Those two frame are exactly the same frame but with a different shock fitted rear you get 110 or 130 travel

Front you can run 120/140

Some have done 110 rear 140 front or 120 front

Some have two forks 120 for stage races 140 to go do some enduro

What size are you looking for? There's a guy I know who is looking to sell his 2020 Silverback Stratos AL1 for about R30k. It's been hardly used. Size large. Drop me a PM if you want to consider it.

Norco Fluid FS1 - Best components in that price range. Not the lightest bike, but looks pretty nice. Make sure to get the latest model (not previous year) as they updated suspension, etc.

Or if they have old stock of the Trek, Giant, etc. you might get a good deal.
