stephanventer0 Posted October 8, 2020 Share Stolen: Trek Slash 9.9 Carbon 2017When: 5 October 2020Where: Stellenbosch, Western CapeThe bike was locked on my Thule roof rack, my two kids bikes were also locked on the roofrack. My bike was removed from the Thule claw without picking the lock, so Thule claw was leveraged open by force to wiggle the frame out of the locking mechanism I left my car parked on municipal parking spot next to the Eerste River on Noordwal Wes Road between Helderberg and Louw street at 8:15. I returned to my car at 10:00 and counted only two bikes on the roofrack. My kids bikes on the left and middle Thule ski was left untouched. My bike was removed from the right hand side Thule ski.Get further details about the incident in the Stolen Bikes section
Leith Posted October 10, 2020 Share mine was the following day, just on the other side of the eerste river - busy Dorp street with lots of people milling around. Also a Thule bick rack that they seem to have forced the bike out of the clamp - not sure how they do that without anyone noticing. People are generally pretty useless when it comes to this kind of thing. Most wouldnt notice a theft like this right under their nose. Ad in a culture obsessed with screens, and people really arent paying any attention to what is going on around them. Then, even worse is the ones who actually see something going on, but couldnt be bothered enough to do or say anything - not thier property, not their problem kind of attitude. I was once mugged, at knife point, by three laaities, right outside the Gautrain Station in JHB. Literally in between dozens of people. No one says or does a thing. OP, sorry for your loss. Unfortunately, those Thule clamps arent particulry secure - if leaving bikes unatended on a roof rack, I would still use a cable lock as an extra safety measure
WrightJnr Posted October 10, 2020 Share There’s a few YouTube videos showing how easy bikes are removed from Thule roof racks. Free the wheels and use the bike itself as leverage to twist out. If you know what you doing I recon the guy loading up parked next to you wouldn’t even notice! So sorry for your loss OP.
