Bikepacking routes and camp sites around Van Gaarlens / Harties?

Hi Folks,

I live in Hoedspruit, and im looking for some advise on bike packing routes and more importantly, safe and clean campsites in the area around Van Gaarlens, Hartibeesport dam.

If I can find a few safe places to camp in the area, I can try and link them up and create a route.

I want to plan a 3 or 4 day bike packing trip around that area with my family.

Alternatively is anyone knows of an existing route with places to camp/stay in Gauteng, Northwest or Limpopo, please let me know.

Any help or advise will be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks,

Pete.

Hi Pete, I would definately recomend Mountain Sanctuary Park - https://www.mountain-sanctuary.co.za/

Omaramba Resert near buffelspoort - its right across the road from the dam - https://www.omaramba.co.za/

Not sure how far or what kind of distances you  want to do, but if you want go as far as Rustenberg, Definately camp inside the Kgaswane Mountian Reserve - Its not as well kept as the Rustenberg Kloof Caravan park, but the sense of place is amazing, and the ride up is well worth it.

If you are looking for something a bit more "Packaged" - this trip of ours, Starting in Pretoria, and making its way to Groot Marico may be of interest. Its a small group tour, so there wont be any more than 12 riders on any given departure - https://adventurelogistics.co.za/mtb-adventures/local-mtb-adventures/mafikeng-road-mtb-gravel-tour/

Also feel free to contact me if you want any input on Routes etc. This area is basically my back yard

Hi T_Boss,

Thanks for the reply, I will defiantly check out the places you have mentioned.

I had a look at your website and I must say, the Richtersveld tour is very intriguing.

I would like to contact you and ask a few questions about it.

Many thanks,

Pete.
