Best and safest place to ride your road bike in SA

Hi Guys, I am planning a 2 week trip to do some riding away from Johannesburg... a bit tired of riding the cradle 3 to 4 4 times a week.

The coastal areas are obviously scenic but need to plan the ride accordingly... also not a good idea to ride on the N2 ... But where in the country do you think is the best place for rod biking....

Thank you for your responses.

Mpumalanga..... Honestly, there are passes there that will blow your mind.

The whole area arounf Pilgrims rest, Merry Pebbles, MacMac falls etc... The roads are quiet, in good condition and go forever..

The surrounds are beautiful too

I'd be very worried about the trucks in those areas.

Pilgrims Rest to Graskop would definitely be a bit dodgy, but the road between Graskop and Sabie would be perfectly fine, as would Sabie up Long Tom. I've done a fair bit of cycling from Mount Sheba/Crystal Springs to Pilgrims Rest (both road and gravel) and it's by far the best riding that I've done.

However I would also take on Plett to Natures in the off-season. And then I've also done Oliviershoek Pass on the border between FS and KZN which was pretty damn good, but the rest of the roads could be worrisome (both for traffic and your legs if you're gonna spend 2 weeks there).

I'd probably set up base in Sabie if I were going to spend a week or two riding. You can ride in so many directions from there, and if you've got an MTB, take that too to go ride in the plantation/forest.

As you are bored with the Cradle, look south.

Suikerbosrand is close by and infinitely better than the Cradle for a road bike ride.

Challenging, scenic, safe and quiet (possibly too quiet for some). It is a one-way loop with a 30km speed limit. You can do 50km and not see a car.

Riding there from Jo'burg is also quite easy (and safe) if you want a longer ride. Riding home afterwards is an entirely different kettle of fish though.

Travelling in Mpumalanga now, and coming from CT i am dying with jealousy over some of these roads, and their close by pristine looking gravel routes... Will have to bring the bike next time and stay for the weekend...

This, and if you can do two x full laps, its pretty good.

More to OP, Clarens area is nice too, some teams go out there on training camps.

There was talk about a cycling route from Knysna all the way to Cape Town at some point. How is that coming along?

Gravel routes all the way - roadies should just face the facts, get a drop bar bmx, they go fine on our dodgy roads and we are blessed with poor infrastructure meaning loads of gravel and ever worsening tar - I love be roadbike feel but the comfort of wider tyres - that said I’m ageing and slow

Between Sedgefield and George via wilderness - there and back about 100km not many cars and plenty hills

The road between Mooi River and Giants Castle and some of the other tar / gravel roads in that area are amazing.

Dead quiet and so scenic. Plenty of accommodation in the area too.
