rorydewet Posted December 11, 2020 Share Guys most of use here try support your LBS as much as you can. My question is when do you give up and call its quits and find better service albeit a bit further away. My local bike shop is Eagle Canyon Cycles near Northgate Jhb run by Conrad. 2 weeks ago we dropped my wife's Spez rumor for a major service. Picked the bike up on Friday cost is R 580. We made the trip to Northern Farms on Sunday but the wife couldn't ride her newly serviced bike , the chain kept dropping. I checked if you pedaled and stopped the back cassette kept rotating pushing the chain forward with that causing the chain to drop of the front chain ring. We took bike back to shop on Sunday. and spoke to them. They said you just booked for major service you never asked us to check the chain. I asked did you not ride the bike. So Conrad took a spin around the car park and chain dropped. sorry i now see the problem please book bike back in. Book back in again. Now Friday we go check. Bike has not been repaired, in fact no feedback from shop till we went in. Needs parts cost will be R 3000 but need to order parts so cant ride weekend. Surely when doing a major service you check this stuff. we now sit 2 weeks later and wife cant ride and I'm in the dog box for taking it to Eagle who I have supported over a long period. In addition they have had my sons Scott Spark since March 2020 as it needed repairs to front shock. At beginning it was COVID and the part could not be obtained from Omnico as they needed to import it. That's understandable COVID shut stuff down. However we now sit 9 months later and Eagle have still not fixed the bike and always have a different story. Wrong part. Part got but not with remote lock out. Customs hold up. Omnico dont know. i could have cycled to Europe and back by now to fetch the part. Enough is enough. we took both bikes back and will move to another shop from now. I'll service with Linden from now on, a bit further but worth it. That said if anyone knows of a good repair shop in the Rand Park Ridge area please let me have details. Chris_ Posted December 11, 2020 Share Northcliff Cycles is not that far either. They're a good bunch of dudes. Granted I haven't had serious bike work done there, have only popped in many times to buy the odd thing, plus a lekker chat. Re LBS, I don't know, there are a lot of excuses in the world, especially in 2020, but at the end of the day its up to you how many you want to entertain on good faith. Thereafter you're only 'hurting' yourself. FondTF2, Owen_DJ, Al Allen and 1 other
RudolphG Posted December 11, 2020 Share Just travel a bit further past Northgate until you see Nicholas Plants on your right. In there is Cyclists Workshop. Been my LBS for the last 2 years and never had an issue. They also have lots of used bikes for sale. Ask for Josh. Markellis Posted December 11, 2020 Share It blows my mind with the huge number of bike shops we have nowadays that for some reason some bike shops expect subpar service to just be tolerated. Granted not all shops, but it’s definitely hit and miss these days. The price we pay for bikes and components these days surely warrants more vigilant service. Gone are the days where the average visit to a bike shop is a few hundred bucks. My 2 cents ChrisF
grc Posted December 11, 2020 Share Just do a search on the Hub for Eagle Canyon - they are not renowned for excellent service. As a matter of fact it could well be the opposite... LongDonkey
Edereese Posted December 11, 2020 Share Post like this make me want to open a bike shop. The current market requires customer and quality service. From my experience, there's a huge lack of both #manifestating Went to a shop the other day for brake cables for a road bike I was working on, only to get home and see they gave me mountain bike cables. Luckily I had spare cables, will exchange it next time I'm there. Why not fit a different wheel and your wife should be able to ride for the time being. It seems like something is wrong with your freehub, maybe just requires a service. R3 000 for parts seems a bit excessive. Cunning-Stunt, dasilvarsa and LongDonkey
IceCreamMan Posted December 11, 2020 Share sorry to hear. Eagle Canyon always were good to me but there are a few stories on Hubland. Northcliff also gave me excellent service as did Linden. You dont need the aggro on top of every day life.
Wimmas Posted December 11, 2020 Share I can vouch for Northcliff Cycles which is close to you. I have done a major service with them. Cadence World in Krugersdorp is also exceptional and actually my first choice. Gavin D Smith

JuddMan Posted December 11, 2020 Share The amount of complaints I am seeing regarding poor service from providers/shops is simply mind blowing!! I cannot believe that in a world where business has not been the best for everyone, shops were closed for some months and the like, that people continue to give poor service. It honestly feels as providers/shops feel like they are doing us a favor by completing a task that WE ARE PAYING FOR!
