Bonus Posted December 13, 2020 Share I'm reading that a new Hippo has wandered into NF and is currently basking in one of the dams! I remember the last hippo there, about 6 years ago. Managed to catch sight of him a few times, usually in Fish Eagle Dam, and have some pics somewhere of him yawning. Very impressive. Hope he stays a while but doesn't cause too much damage . . . . IceCreamMan Posted December 13, 2020 Share That would give me added motivation. Never saw that one. Did not even know there was one which is probably a good thing.

Bonus Posted December 13, 2020 Share The last one just wandered off in the end as far as I know. There was another one at a different bike park that was killed so that people could swim in a dam if I remember, but that wasn't NF. River Rat Posted December 13, 2020 Share I paddle the nearby Crocodile river quite often and after my body went pear shaped thanks to COVID I really don't need the competition from a hippo. Edited December 13, 2020 by River Rat Bonus
Kranswurm Posted December 13, 2020 Share I paddle the nearby Crocodile river quite often and after my body went pear shaped thanks to COVID I really don't need the competition from a hippo. They can travel vast distances at night and in the morning hey presto you have a new hippo in you garden pond.We used to paddle in the Marble Hall area and the rivers on the farms are loaded with flat dogs and hippo.Somewhere on here or maybe FB is a graphic of the rivers of Southern Africa and these animals will follow them. MudLark Posted December 13, 2020 Share Hippos pretty much stay in the water during the day anyway – or sleep on the riverbank. It's at night that they are usually a menace on foot paths et cetera. 100Tours Posted December 13, 2020 Share Yah we had one arrive in our tiny farm dam a few weeks back. we tracked it back down to the river in the valley below (14km and 500m in altitude distant) - which is quite a climb for a hippo. 2 days later it was gone again - heading in the direction of Dullstrooom. Those trout okes better watch out.. Bonus

The adjacent property was repossessed by the bank an they they were not taking care of the animals. Heia requested that they relocate the animal which they refused to do. Iirc it was culled.
