Giba Enduro & Flash photography

So i've got a bit of a strange question. Has anyone who has done an Enduro or DH race had issues with photographers taking flash photos of them while they compete? Reason I ask is that i'm keen to go shoot some action at Giba this coming weekend, but don't want to affect the riders in any way. I don't think the flash will be too much of a distraction, but will probably clear it with the race organisers first. Just wanted some first hand feedback from riders themselves

TIA

Best to clear it with the organisers.

At Bellville Velodrome (indoor cycling) I was allowed to use the flash during practice sessions - after speaking to the organisers AND riders.  NO, they would not allow it during the races.

At two other outdoor events I used it without any issues, during the ride.

Actually want to go do this at the jump section at Bloemendal (Kuilvoergat), when the serious guys grab air along the right hand side track.

If you choose a spot where the sun is behind you, flash might not be necessary.

In shaded areas flash becomes necessary where slower speeds would create too much blur.

Blur with flash (to freeze the cyclist) also produces good creative results.

As long as you are not shooting from in front of the cyclists with direct flash it shouldn't be a problem either.

Great shots are taken (with flash) where you are forward of the cyclist and your flash is aimed at 90 degrees to the cyclist or from slightly behind the cyclist (with a remote trigger).

Good luck...

Thanks guys. Going to speak to the organizers first and get some clarity on what I can do. Dont really know how much light will be available on the descents, so flash is probably going to be mandatory. Thanks for the advice guys

As a rider I wouldn’t be impressed. Especially not on an enduro stage. Had this before on races and it’s distracting.

Run your ISO up and you’ll still get good shutter speeds. A good photographer is an invisible photographer.

Which is why it is often not allowed.

Jip, technically you can tweak the settings to get an okay pic ....

Working the flash settings it becomes possible to get a totally different type of photo.

But, it is a sporting event ... the photographer may not distract the participants.

Agreed. Not the answer I was hoping for, but totally understandable. Will have to remain inconspicuous then. Thanks mate
