Hub race calendar?

Jules

Recommended Posts

Am I the only person finding it increasingly difficult to plan my upcoming races?

It seems that Cycle Lab and Cyclingnews are now in competition over race entries. As a result, neither site's calendar carries the other's races.

I find this extremely frustrating.

What would be ideal is an online race calendar that has no vested interests and would host all races regardless of their affiliation.

The Hub strikes me as a good place to host such a calendar. Admin, what do you say? smiley9.gif More primitively, I could start a thread such as "Gauteng races in Aug and Sept" and then keep editing the post as details of races come rolling in?

Good idea?

haven't been on the ss site in ages, but i always found spinman's calendar to be quite good. i have the calendars as put out at the start of the year. can mail them in you want. (they aren't totally comprehensive)

Don't forget Entrytime also has their list.

It would be great if there is a complete calendar and if you click on the race name, it take you to the relevant entry page. Can't all these people setup RSS feeds that can be hosted here.

Yes, that is helpful, but the ideal calendar would include MTB races and also wallet-friendly events such as Benoni World Champs and Rooiwal.

What I find more annoying than the races being on different web sites is having to re-fill 5 pages of details in each time and not being allowed to continue unless you update them like with the amashova and lost city entries!

Great Idea - coincidentally I was thinking about a "Hub Events" section earlier today. A comprehensive and up to date online race calendar has always been lacking.

I think the idea of a community managed calendar could work quite well. Events could be submitted by anyone, preferably the race organiser but essentially anyone could submit. Calendar managers or admins could be appointed to certain areas. Their role would be to approve submissions and changes to calendar entries. Almost like a Wiki-pedia for events.

I see this as the best way of keeping it up to date and making it as comprehensive as possible. Of course the reliability of the information could be a problem, but there would have to be proper measures in place to validate submissions.

What are your thoughts? Could it work?

Latrinus doesn't have much to do - maybe he can vett calender entries?Wink

Seriously though perhaps CSA officials that are members could keep an eye on the official events in their area.   The good thing about a Hub calender is that it could include church rides, charity events, "official" hub rides etc.

Good idea! It will always be up to date (unlike the printed programme from CSA!), and once a user base is established, the event organisers can stimulate interest in their events, by regular postings - a la Kremmetart! Good one Jules!Thumbs%20Up

Definately a need, but not on another www site where it is only view-able via browser - it is not nice to go to different www sites to check different calendars. (cycling running etc )

Option is to make it a Google calendar

One can the overlay it on your personal Google Calendar, or even overlay it in Outlook etc

"Google Calendar Sync" - but not public calendars yet.

RemoteCalendars is a COM-.NET Add-in for Outlook 2003/2007

Display your Google Calendar in Windows Calendar (Windows Vista includes a built-in calendar application )
