Cross country versus marathon

Trail riding is hectic jumps and stuff. Not for the faint hearted.

XC is usually ht, but most guys get dual suspension bikes that can be used for everything.

XC = 40km or 1hr of lap racing = HT and 80-100mm DS

Half marathon = 30-40km = HT and 80-100mm DS

Marathon = 70km+ = HT and 80-100mm DS

Ultra Marathon = 100km+ = HT and 80-100mm DS

Trail = 120-150mm DS

All mountain/freeride = <180mm DS

Downhill = >180mm DS

That is exactly what I wanted. Thanks Mampara.

XC = intensive racing, laps, technical, and HUGE on fun (and heart rate) single track not congested, cos few enough people have discovered it, and the person ahead of you is too fast to catch

for me, the official definitions of what bikes for what types of riding are a bit wrong-way-around - i take the dual suspention (defined as all-mountain) to the xc events, cos i like the relaxed geometry on the tricky bits. and done plenty of marathins on the hardtail, which is defined as xc-bike
