  1. The point of my original Facebook post appears to have been lost on a lot of people. In summary then... We know that some drivers drive their cars like idiots. We can't change their behaviour no matter how often and how loudly we point a finger at them. We just can't. The reality is that cyclists have it in their power to minimise the risk presented by rogue car drivers by actively riding in a defensive and sensible manner. Riding 5 or 6 abreast on a road that is known to be a killing field for cyclists is not, by any stretch of the whataboutist's imagination, doing the sensible thing. All you are doing is making the target 5 or 6 times bigger. If we want to reduce cycling fatalities, we have to pack our cycling egos away and look within the cycling community to do it ourselves. In South Africa it's not going to happen by enforcing laws, we are too far down the road of lawlessness to achieve that.
  2. Don't forget the conclusion that I'm not entitled to an opinion because I still use Facebook. It's pure Ludditeism.
  3. I agree, and if I'd seen any I would have done. they were all remarkably well behaved, even the taxi's.
  4. I have to disagree with you. The amount of drunk drivers out early on a Sunday morning is staggering, and riding 3 or 5 abreast on a stretch of road where people invariably speed is asking to get rear ended.
  5. Just hanging out in the back row eating my popcorn. My initial observation is that the level of confirmation bias around here is pretty much the same as it was back in 2006 when I first joined 'the hub'. For context, on Sunday I was down there photographing runners, the cyclists were just a scary sideshow that I had to watch and suffer all the way from Wynberg to Simonstown. I didn't go there to try to make them look bad. They did that themselves.
  6. Very true. A second battery for my bike is about R12k. And weighs about as much as R12K in 1c coins.
  7. What about those disk brakes on road bikes hey? Disk brakes!! I felt so strongly about them that I almost wrote a letter.
  8. My ebike is limited to 32kph. If the bunch can only manage that speed when drafting in a pack then the problem isn’t the e-bike.
  9. What is the challenge of doing an event if you have pedals and a chain to help you? Stick to the original bicycle design if you want purity.
