  1. Excellent route and event, will put this on my calendar for next year. One of the best hard 1 days out there at the moment!
  2. Looking forward more to the downhills after Hawekwa. That climb starts at the top end of my family farm, not much without elevation in the area. Can't wait!!
  3. Amazing trails in this part of the world, look forward to a tough day out!
  4. If it is not the strap, often the cause is the batteries. I had problems with very high readings suddenly and it just seemed erratic. Thought i would try my luck at Navworld, The service guy said Energiser batteries are often below spec. I had used a new Energiser battery and when the Navworld guy changed it for another brand the unit was fine. Also have had problems using Energiser 2032 lithium batteries in powertap hubs. Anyway, now stay away from that brand for these particular batteries, which is a pain because they seem to be the most common.
  5. Googled it. Glonass is a Russian version of GPS. Works better in the Northern latitudes, stick to GPS.
  6. Puma Nightcat This works well, and reflective. Light Comfortable Can fit what I need and no more
  7. Sorry to hear about that, hope you heal up soon. Scary, just takes a moment for a situation like that. Make sure you get hold of the road accident fund, they can help pay for some of the bills. Roadworks often seem to take place with no consideration for other road users, besides cars!
  8. Wow, that was good! All kinds of terrain, tough, well marked and no traffic jams. Shorter routes did not interfere with the marathon at all. Felt like an Epic lite stage, well planned top class event!! Can see Nissan Trailseeker made an effort this year.
  9. 60km was great, solid race. Route very well marked and good support. Some of the route was part of the 3rd day from Grape Escape, not a lot of climbing. The sand, mud, water crossings and rocky terrain kept it tough. Very enjoyable!
  10. It was me who hit that unsuspecting pole in the middle of the narrowing road, while we were near the beginning and still bunched. Got back on the bike after checking self for anything broken, fortunately just a battered with roasties. Enjoyed the rest of route especially those terrifying downhills and climbs. In the end, it was quite an eventful day. Crashed once, wrong turn twice and waiting for what seemed like thousands of sheep to be herded though a gate that I needed to pass though. Ppa seemed to pay less attention because of the events size, maybe we should expect less of them and just use ppa as a bicycle computer?

    Plugs!

Riding with some of the hardcore Hermanus crowd from Hermanus to Lebanon forest. Motoring it down a rocky single track section, a nice sharp rock sliced a whole, too big for sealant. My measly little plug kit would not have fixed the situation. Fortunately one of the guys seemed to know all the tricks. I think he is a doctor by profession, anyway 1st he pulled out a small round file and as he described it as "cleaning the wound". Then he pulled out one of those big plugs No-Muppets described and squirted it full of tube repair glue. He stuck the glue covered plug into the tire with one of those forked tools, and cut off the excess with a small blade. The plug held for the +/- 40km home and 100s of hours riding since. Lesson learnt, upgraded my riding kit to; big plugs + plug tool, small file, glue, blade, bombs + pump(bombs kill sealant), spare tube(last resort). The hassle of lugging these things with you is small compared to being stuck miles from nowhere.
  12. Saw a male lynx 8m away from me about a week ago. Not far from your pics, along the single track bouncy section just after coming down Everest Hill/what ever its called. It was an overcast morning with not many people on the track. Lots of these striped field mice. Anyway i saw this movement as i was coming down the hill and thought it was a small bokkie(not a honey), so i stopped. It was so close that i immediately realized it was a lynx, and male. At first I was a little frightened because it was staring at me after the screeching of my breaks. But then it just carried on hunting between the fynbos. It flicked it's tale just like a domestic cat does when hunting. Then after a while, it just moved off looking for prey behind other bushes around. All the while not even giving me another look. Just like you, one feel's so privliged. We need to protect these place.
  13. Just upgraded from my old Rock Shox Judy TT to the Reba Race, must say its as good as getting a new bike. The lbs laughed at the weight of the old thing, it was very reliable and behaved close to a rigid bike with a piece of lead attached to the front. The new fork is amazing and downhills have improved in both handling and speed by at least a third. PushLoc is a treat and allows you to run the fork buttery smooth and not look like a po-go stick on the uphills (money well spent) . cwc and crc seem well priced. Sammyboy2010-06-02 12:31:21
