  1. My iPhone 5 dropped out of my gilet pocket during a road ride yesterday morning. I have no idea where. Tried "Find my iPhone" but it's offline. Either found a new owner or it broke on impact. Traced back my route and looked in the gutters. Busy route, so it was most likely picked up. It was in a Pocpac pouch - design was made for export, so it's not part of their range. Phone is locked, but has a sticker on the back that can help identify me. If anyone has found it and can't trace me, please contact me this way. Phone has been blacklisted for what it's worth and the SIM card cancelled. I've written off finding it, but you never know.
  2. definitely an area being targeted by criminals.
  3. Police are ineffective to varying degrees in all countries of the world. There is not one country in the world where police solve all crime and approach each incident with 100% commitment. The reason police are more effective & respected elsewhere is because society is able to distinguish between right and wrong to a greater degree. In other words, more people obey the law and know it's wrong to steal a bike. Less crime, means more resources available to police per crime investigated. I disagree that the price of a bike motivates a criminal to steal a bike. They never realise the full value of a bike when they sell it anyway. They take what they can get. Even when stolen "to order", cars or bikes never sell for the same or more than if a bike is sold legitimately. In Europe, really stuffed up commuter bikes are stolen by the truckload every single day. They are worth very little. A 2015 Specialized Marathon sells for €6400 (about R90000) in Germany, so our prices are not wildly off the charts these days. Value doesn't determine theft frequency, it just pushes an item up the scale of "want to steal". Other than look after our bikes when we store and transport them, I believe there is little else we can do to reduce theft. Bike theft is crime and a part of the bigger problem we have in South Africa. It's about the lack of a moral compass in large parts of our society, plus the knowledge that the consequences , when caught, may not ever be experienced. Lastly. What concerns me most about our crime situation is the willingness of the criminal to apply deadly force to acquire a throwaway item like a mobile phone. A bike may cost more than a phone, but I would also not attach a huge amount of value to my bikes. They are just recreational tools and not worth dying for. In a hijack situation I'd be more than wiling to hand over the bike, but the criminal may still decide to pull the trigger or plunge a knife into me, sommer só. #just saying.
  4. There are legal cycling trails accessible from the top of Red Hill or Black Hill. They run between the 2 "Hills",Glencairn sits below Black Hill. Tracks may be a bit sandy. Permit required, but don't ask me where to get one close by. Nearest would be Tokai office, but no day permit option.
  5. A Cyclist was hijacked in the Cape Point area this morning, probably around 7am. She said it happened close to the Cape Point Ostrich farm, but also said she saw the car head off up Red Hill. Therefore I think the attack happened closer to the Red Hill Y-Junction. 2 coloured males (her description, not mine) in a new shape, white Audi Station Wagon robbed her of her bike and phone. She called into Cape Talk this morning, that's how I heard about this. Already posted on my Facebook and Twitter page. The road from Smitswinkel to Scarborough is not safe! The out of town guys need to know this. Especially early in the morning is when most attacks have occurred. There have been about 5 this year? Speaking under correction. There was even an incident on the Red Hill road where cyclists were stoned riding past the informal settlement. Don't ride alone and try and get to this area a little later, if you can. When the tourists are on the road to Cape Point it should be safer to ride there. Be vigilant and keep a lookout behind you and for vehicles parked on the side of the road. As you can see from the incident this morning, it's not necessarily and old clapped out vehicle that you need to look out for. Stealing bikes is clearly a lucrative pastime for some! By the way. The Table Mountain tracks are safe with no incidents reported off the tar roads for well over a year now. Lots of snake sightings in Tokai, so be careful. We expect the usual spike in crime over the festive period, so be extra vigilant wherever you ride your bike. Consider downloading the free MySOS App to use in case of any emergency. Saves you having to find numbers to call as the App gives you the relevant numbers based on your location (in the country). Stay safe and Happy Holidays.
  6. Last night's end of year night ride. Great to see such a big turnout despite the gale.
  7. Go to www.tablemountainbikers.co.za and send me the application form.
  8. Cathsseta is a government entity. I think a government or municipal entity should not be sponsoring commercial events. There are more pressing issues that need financial intervention. Logistics of this event must be "tiny" compared to overseas road events and be easily affordable for the big financial institutions. They fall all over themselves to sponsor mtb events, but seem allergic to getting behind road events. What is CSA doing about this? Is it not in their interest to keep the event alive? Cape Minstrels got R25Million of Lotto money last week. Just saying.

My wife would like to name & shame the rider with number 3D 3780. He tossed a gel packet away. When she told him that was uncool, he said the packaging was biodegradable.
  10. My 1,89m frame weighing 86kg (hopefully 83kg by Epic) feels like a climbing machine.Very privileged to be riding this bike.
  11. Come and ride the Elgin race in 2015. Promise you that the second edition of the event won't cost the earth and you'll get another route I want to add. No t-shirts, promise. I don't know your clothing taste, so why would I try to dress you!? I'll try and get the PPA office to offer the choice of either a medal or the ZAR amount donated to a cycling cause or charity.
