  1. I'm in the process of looking a replacement frame. Mine failed just behind the BB - classic cyclic fatigue crack. I did quite a bit of investigation before making the decision not to repair (I have my own TIG welding facilities as well access to specialist welders, which already better positions me to repair than most and still chose not to). In a nut shell, though, it come heat treatment process. If you can't get this done right in any high stress area of the frame, repeat failure will come again fairly soon. The welding is relatively easy. On the the other hand, finding someone that can do heat treatment and also jigging so the frame stays straight etc. becomes a time consuming and expensive task Most modern aluminum frames are made with either 6061 or 7005 then heat treated. The heat treatment processes are different for both with 7005 being less onerous. Information the required processes is on the web and not a great secret, but will take a little time to scratch out. There are many folks who have broken frames and these questions have been answered many times before (even on this site a few times although answers elsewhere were, IMO, more comprehensive). Where the OPs frame has broken, maybe it was a defect in the casting and can be fixed and hold for a while, but personally I wouldn't try my luck. Another thought for the OP: It would appear the 2 parts have now been bent away from each other and taken on a 'permanent set'. When you pull them back to each other and weld them, you will be locking in that force - the 2 parts will always be trying to spring away from each other, but the weld is restraining them. This means there is stress in there even before you get on the bike. A pre-stressed component is not ideal as this makes cyclic fatigue failure easier to happen (again you can google this if you are interested). Heat treatment processes can be used to fix this to a degree or even fully, but then you are back to doing those processes. I know this isn't pleasant news, but still better than next failure which a catastrophic and you take a tumble that easily costs you more on pain, suffering and medical bills than replacing the frame now
  2. Just be prepared for short battery life - my 130 gets about half of the advertised 'up to 15 hours' connected to phone, HR and cadence sensors only, which when quizzing Garmin support is fairly normal.
  3. 830 has proper navigation since the touch screen makes this practical Old Ant+ sensors work just fine - the only difference is that the new sensors are bluetooth as well as Ant+ and the 830 and 530 support both as well (I believe all the current Edge x30 Garmins do)
  4. As I stated above, the phone seems to be the biggest problem. big difference between 6 hours and the advertised 15. Even RC rainmaker comment on only getting 11 hrs (I think) and the reply from Garmin is that 15hrs is based on nothing connected and generally ideal conditions. Fortunately the 530 is not the same (not to say I'll gt 20hrs, but not as extreme as only 40% of advertised battery life)
  5. I haven't isolated them yet like I did on my 130, but I suspect not much. It seems to be a linked phone can help eat up the battery on the unit though. Did on my 130
  6. Yep, big plus for me too. I have a Garmin 130 that manages about 5-6 hours and its toast (been like that since new - just need to send it back sometime). The 530, can run a full week of training sessions no problem incl supporting, HR strap, speed and power (which included cadence) as well as link to Garmin connect app on Cell all the time while on the bike
  7. About 5 months - see my post on previous page - having said that some other Garmin products launched after the Edge 530/830 were available in SA 2 months before the Edge 530/830
  8. That 1000 post idea is such BS - just because to have a 1000 things to say doesn't make you are decent person to do business with and vice versa. Look at my rating and post counts
  9. Amazing the variance in pricing - Easibike want R7999, Cyclelab R7499 and Sportsman warehouse R6999 (for the 530 bundle). What really surprises me is that Easibike are the most expensive, where generally they are well priced, whiles Sportsmans warehouse, are the cheapest and they normally are not cheap. If you are on Discovery Vitality (and have jumped through all their hoops), then it is a no brainer to go the sportsmans route. Amazing how long it has taken though, for these product to get to SA. Launched in Late April only available here late September!
  10. Can you not fit a Garmin Charge Power Pack - https://shop.navworld.co.za/garmin-charge-power-pack.html ? Supposed to double battery time even if it is expensive. Otherwise, look at a dynano hub front wheel and usb charger
  11. Where did you get the pricing? - certainly steep R1700 difference on 530 between unit only and performance bundle R1500 difference on 830 between unit only and performance bundle Performance bundle is HR strap, speed and cadence sensors - Same in both cases?
  12. Sent an email to Garmin support asking the same question early this morning - will post the updated reply
  13. Every computer has its glitches somewhere - be careful of motherhood statements on an old M400 and relating that to newer replacements. (I've got a little Garmin 130 that was glitchy on early firmware updates, but for the most part it is solid) BUT: The V650 is 5 years old - thats quite an old hardware platform in this ever changing tech part of cycling (granted there are firmware updates) The M460 is about 2 years old, putting it somewhere between Garmin 520 and 520 plus -this thread is about the launch of the 520 plus replacement Both the above aren't new in this industry & may well be due for replacement soon - ponder that Also, have a check on DC Rainmaker - the reviews tend to be comprehensive and IMO unbiased lastly refer to this thread: https://community.bikehub.co.za/topic/161756-polar-v650-vs-garmin-520/page-2 I have no axe to grind with Polar, but I moved to Garmin (from Polar) after a fair amount of review. For me it was between Wahoo and Garmin in terms of product, but Garmin got the nod because of Vitality
  14. Had a reply from local Garmin Support on 18 June saying: "Unfortunately, no exact launch date has been provided as yet. We are hoping to launch the unit before the end of the month." I note they launched the Forerunner 45 here last week which was launched in the US a week AFTER the edge 530 & 830, so I would imagine it will be soon......
  15. Bike shops should start stocking Levi 541s
