  1. I had a hoot. Can't fault the route. That 50k is not for the faint hearted. But... sooooo much more interesting than the old route of a few years ago. Agree they should start at 6am if possible. Woesed out this year and did the 25k sprint. Finished at 8.10am and there was still plenty batches lining up, some of those poor suckers must have got off at like 9.30am for a late lunch finish! Shame man!! The new finish was ok (still love those cold face cloths!) but the layout of the food and beverage hospitality wasn't so lekker. Bit confusing inside Riversand Farm. Couldn't find the beer tent (well... it didn't slam me in the face... lol) so I left. But all in all, an awesome morning.
  2. I'm from the other side of the Jukskei and aside from riding the first JUMA (which actually sucked) I'd never ridden the spruit. On an invitation from friends I rode there on Sunday. We rode from Cambridge Crossing around the dam and back. OMG... it was freakin' horrible... smelled like sh*t and p*ss the whole way... trash and litter everywhere. When you go under the bridges it's like you're riding through a vagrants bedroom. There we are on our bombing along on our R30k bikes and these poor bastards are scraping out an existence living under a bridge. VERY uncomfortable. VERY awkward. And if I was riding alone it would've been flippin' terrifying. All I want when I ride is to get out and enjoy fresh air and nature. But overall this ride actually depressed me. Jeez... I sound like a moaner... but heck... I DON'T recommend it.
  3. Info needed: Are they accepting line entries for this race?
  4. Oh, and I nearly got taken out by a flying cone. missed my head by a couple of inches
  5. I reckon the cardinal sin for any race organiser is to run out of drinks at a water point. I'd lost a bottle just after the turn and was quite happy knowing that there was a WP about 15k ahead. Pretty sucky getting there and there was no drinks of any description. But... BIG KUDOS to the Helivac Doc in the silver i35 who stopped while I was cramping and gave me some pills and a Rehidrate. Thanks man!
  6. The tunnel was an amazing experience. Wanted it to carry on. Like nothing I've ever done on a MTB. The marshals on that section were great. Kudos to them. I expected the bottle necks so I didn't take it as a race. But they were quite irritating. 20 minutes at one point. The design of the scaffold bridges sucked. The sloots were very slippery, but what can you expect? Pretty disgusting around Grayston area. There was a surreal almost post apocalyptic section where some pretty wild looking dudes were chopping felled trees and there were sheet plastic tents. Not a marshall or security guard in sight. Not cool. Water points that don't serve water! I rode an easy 4 hours on 1 water bottle. I don't drink sugar (Red Bull or Bos Ice Tea.) Lucky it was cool otherwise could be a problem. Also not cool. Will I be back? Today, I say no, but by the time next year rolls around I probably will.
  7. Cool. Good luck with the lo-carbing! Just talking from my experience, maybe skip the dried fruit and bananas. Same effect on your body as the gels. And be carefull with the nuts. Hidden carbs deluxe.
  8. Lets face it, the Carte Blanche segment on HFLC / Banting was pretty lame. Uninformative. No science, just sensationalism. The debate on Twitter after was the usual hogwash of dieticians (pro and am) spouting garbage about "everything in moderation - eat less move more - Noakes has no science to back up his claims". AAAARRRGGGHHHH!!!! I don't know how Prof Tim keeps going. Power to him.
  9. Yeah, I think some European company was trying to copyright the word "Rooibos".
