Thanks. There are so many options. Smaller chainring with the 14 (for which there are also stock issues). Last resort is mtb crank with 36t on the current cluster. Discipline? From a racing snake that just wants to ride away from me? But yes, I could just restrict the limits on the derailleur for training purposes.

We are looking for a 16t junior road rear cluster for Shimano freehub. My daughter wants to do the WP Road Cycling champs and have to get the geared rollout for u17 within the regulations. We have one on order but no guarantees it will be here in time (4 weeks), and would like her to train a bit with the lower gearing. Just maybe there is someone that has in the past supported a junior and still has one laying around. Thanks.

Doable along the railway maintenance road. I have done it numerous times, extending N of Laingsburg as well. The Spoornet maintenance workers have never seemed bothered by us. There may be some locked gates, but the wires are totally messed (a bit like the Zim border). One snag though. If ridden at pace, be prepared for some bleeding shins and possibly some bike dents because the railway ballast stone is pretty sharp. At touring speeds, no problem. As an aside, I one day mentioned to my Dad that I had ridden up to Laingsburg, and he showed me my Grandads diary (Moms father), who had been postmaster in Maatjiesfontein during the Boer war, and he had to often go to Laingsburg by bike, which he did along the railway. Pretty sure that the bike was a lot heavier, no tubeless tyres and most likely single speed back then.

It was an attack on a single cyclist, preceded by an attack on the two gentleman in the Madimac tops. the video of the pedestrian crossing is not the incident, but where it is described what happened later on. The text in the FB also explains clearly what happened.

Correct, and I did say between Strand and Gordons Bay, and it still is the R44 though. It is also ridden by the vast majority of people riding between GB and Rooi-Els, so warrants aheads-up.

Beyond that gate is the Steenbras Dam, a short drive away. Used to be a popular picnic spot, lovely gardens and short walks. Fond family memories of visiting the dam, especially when it overflowed, more regularly in the 70's. Even had a tea room many years ago if I remember correctly. But, under management of the COCT who have done risk assessments for public access, and deem it wiser to just bar the public rather than risk the snowflakes injuring themselves and suing them. It would be a nice extension to the climb discussed in the last few posts up to the filtration plant, especially if we could follow the road all the way to the gate at the back of Sir Lowries Pass, which used to be a second access point. Used to be a tar road all the way.

Super route. Passed you on my way back, although I only did a 32km to the top of the first hill after Steenbras. Today only saw 4 cyclists, yesterday was busy with a few groups out riding.

I see a farm house just short of 500. The person (dot) that I am following and urging on went past and then seemed to then go back and has since gone dof. I am hoping that it is just to get some shade and sleep. Is your bil BN?

My favorite ride. Agree, earlier better. On the other hand, the busier it gets, the slower the traffic. I feel safer on the coastal road than the R44 to Stellenbosch with the high speeds that cars and trucks are travelling at. This high speed traffic quite often includes MTB'rs in a hurry to get to Jonkers. (It is Friday ) Back to the coastal route beyond GB. Boat trailers are sometimes a wake up call as they are both wider and not always expected. Two incidents though. The first a motorbike coming from the opposite direction and not making the turn, ended up in "our" lane. He just missed a the back end of a bakkie travelling same direction as me, then clipped the wall right in front of me. I had stopped dead and he just made it back out past me, happily carrying along on his way. The second was a "box" in an Audi R8 travelling same direction and definitely not travelling the posted 70km/h speed limit. It also clipped the wall about 50m ahead, leaving bits of plastic and carbon fiber in the road.
