  10. Total Ascent: 1096m The 45km is not to be taken lightly! This is an extended version of the 30km route and includes an extra 5kms of single track, bringing the total distance of single track on the route to 10kms. Riders will need to bring their climbing legs, as they can expect to climb 1096metres on the day to conquer the 3 big climbs waiting for them. The rewards however are stunning views and some of the best flowing single track in the Western Cape. As is the case with the 30km route, riders will start with a lung-bursting 6km long climb to the top of the Bottelary Hills before reaching single track nirvana. Last year’s leg-breaking climb out of Wolfkloof has been removed and has been replaced instead with a straight shot across the ridge to the waiting singletrack. Dropping down past Zewenwacht riders have to get themselves over the short but sharp Kappzicht killer before they get a break at the well stocked water point 2. Rolling on fast roads to the base of the final climb riders will have to muster some courage to conquer this 3km beast. After a quick water stop and an opportunity to take in the incredible views the 45km riders join the 60km route diving down on glorious trails towards Stellenbosch before stopping short and hauling tired bodies past water point 4 and out of the Bottelary Hills whooping into Overgaauw. Again, as is the case with the 30km route, riders must not underestimate the distance. Average riders can expect to ride at an average speed of 12km/h, meaning they will spend around 4 hours to complete the route. Do not attempt this route if you are not fit. 11. The 60km grand-stand event, not to be taken lightly. With 1400m of ascent and around 15kms of delightful twisting singletrack this route is roughly the equivalent of your standard 80km mountain bike challenge. Sharing the same lung-busting leg-burning 6km ascent straight off the start line, this year 60km riders will again delight in the many switchbacks snaking in to Wolfkloof before corkscrewing their way back out again and onto a delightful section of fast and flowing forested singletrack Nirvana. After a brief stop at the first well stocked water point riders will again be thrown into a series of switchbacks as the route descends off the mast, past Zewenwacht (slow down for the view) and on towards Hazendal. Turning 180 degrees to climb back up to the mast and the Yokohama King and Queen of the mountain, riders may well wonder what they have gotten themselves into. Fear not, upon cresting the climb the route opens up descending rapidly (beware the drainage ditches!) to water point 2 at Goede Hoop and then rolling on fast jeep track to the base of the final major climb. Once conquered riders can look forward to an epic 7km stretch of singletrack passing through open fields across dam walls, over granite slabs and into natural bush before spitting riders out onto the final haul up to water point 5. Refueled riders will plummet back down out of the Bottelary Hills to Overgaauw and the finish on the very road they ascended hours earlier Entries Available: https://online.entries.co.za/entries/findperson.aspx?pa=se&eid=3996 Check out the Facebook link to the event page: https://www.stbb.co.za/stbb-mtb-2017/
  12. It's always a pity when sporting event dates clash as we want to support and respect all other events. However, with mountain biking being such a popular sport, there are so many events and we can assure you that when we chose our event's date at the beginning of this calendar year, there were no other mountain biking events on that date. Of course we think you should come and do our event! But let us tell you why: · Our event is consistently described by participants as "the best organized event on the MTB calendar". Not our words, but we thought we'd mention it · Our routes are absolutely unique in that they are hosted on the Bottelary Renosterveld Conservancy and created by expert trail gurus, Bottelary MTB. These routes traverse 22 wine farms and offer you breathtaking views across the mountains of Stellenbosch and Cape Town and the sea at Table Bay and False Bay. There is also ample single track to enjoy while you make your way over these 22 wine farms. · After the event there is a market with delicious food stalls, craft beer, wine tasting, huge Bedoin tents to relax under, and even entertainment for the kids. · All proceeds go to Miles for Smiles who raises funds for Operation Smile to perform life-changing surgery on children born with cleft lips and palates, enabling them to breathe, eat, speak and SMILE normally for the first time! For more info and an entry link, go to https://www.stbb.co.za/stbb-mtb-2017 We REALLY hope to see you there!
