  1. Evening all, I've looked at a few pages and don't see anyone recommending units like the Jackery and Eco-River portables. They are small, but seem to be the difference between small units from Takealot (for router and laptop), and more sophisticated wall mounted units. Why is that? I don't have one, and in fact had an inverter plus 5KW battery installed two months ago. At the time I had a bit of post-purchase regret, but Eskom changed that........it has been a lifesaver and we hardly notice load-shedding. But the portables look interesting - even if you just use them to run your fridge on a camping trip.
  2. Best answer is: use a friend's bike (as long as you don't mind him not being your friend thereafter). We did this as a tour (I used my "old" bike)- afterwards, I took my bike for a thorough clean at a bike shop........a year later, I was still flushing sand out of all sorts of places. You should strip the entire bike and clean - pro tip: never wash your wheels under the (hot) shower - quickest way to snap spokes. Bike doesn't suffer on the ride that much - it's just after
  3. I picked up Covid this last week. It's pretty mild, but I still have flu-like symptoms after 5 days - haven't even tried any kind of exercise. Theoretically, I should be able to at least have an easy spin on the day - really take it slow, but I've heard too many stories of athletes (and I am no athlete) causing long-term damage after exercising after a viral infection, so will probably sit this one out. If you do it, enjoy
  4. Hi there Notso.... I have exactly the same problem - tried a rubber piece, but it didn't really work that well, so now make sure I have a key with me whenever I need to activate the 810. If you have any spares, I'd be happy to pay for one......red will even match my bike....
  5. I rode up to Rhodes Mem yesterday morning (around 08h00) and at the bottom of the "other fun part" singletrack, rode up to a tall guy from behind, walking down the path, tossing litter into the bushes. I passed him and mentioned he had left some litter....which he didn't respond to at all kindly. In polite terms, he mentioned that I should leave quickly, get on my bike and go (I was at the gate at this stage), otherwise he would harm me. When I had lifted my bike over the entrace stile, he came to the other side of the gate quite quickly and continued to abuse me and also struck the gate with a piece of iron pipe he was carrying......mentioning that this could be used on me, to good effect. So, I left. It is clear that he had been sleeping in the forest somewhere there, and although I was not harmed at all, it could have ended differently, I guess. So, take care if you ride there in the mornings. I doubt he is actually out to harm or mug people, one never knows, but definitely don't call him out for littering.
  6. I try to - more especially the ones of the Tour - I really like them. Lance is not the "star of the show" and certainly gets called out on stuff by Hincapie. And, it really is informed commentary on cycling - not sure there is better. Bruyneel is very interesting when it comes to team tactics - he is so often on the money.
  7. Bub, as Cape Diver has pointed out - loads of good riding in UAE. For MTB, see fb sites for MTB Fridays and Hot Cogs. Best thing is to start early (like 05h30) and finish by 08h30. Never take too little water.
  8. Should be able to do it in about 30 mins after you signed up - I just did.
  9. Has anyone picked this up.....? https://www.silkroadmountainrace.cc/ Really amazing scenery - and I guess a bucket list item for the ultra-cyclists....
  10. Just a heads-up - a person who uses the name above is working a scam on K2C entries. Basically, no entries available, so she advises (on the K2C 2018 fb page) that she has an entry for sale. Money changes hands (electronically of course), and then no more. Simple, yet effective. Looking on the K2C page it has happened to at least 2 people so far. So, be alert. and.....if anyone really does have entries for sale, please advise - a friend is in need.
  11. Capediver, are you based in Dubai? I ride these tracks most weeks I'm here.......just like Mars that's for sure, and you don't want to fall much....very sharp and unforgiving.
  12. Gents, if you want to do a bit better in the jumping department, there are a couple of guys who run afternoon sessions on this - tell you how to manual, basics of jumping, landing, etc. It really is a great afternoon - you get to practice SO much that you feel better.....and jumping is really all about confidence on the bike. It's a couple of hundred bucks, but if it can save you a major crash, money well spent.
  13. I had this happen on the way to the Knysna MTB one year - we queued to get fines, a long line....so I wrote to the prosecutor, mentioned that I was in town to spend money and was quite prepared to pay a fine, but that R500 seemed a bit harsh. The fine was squashed. But, easiest way to prevent it is to spend less than R100 on a spare plate (as someone above noted)
  14. Excuse my ignorance.....who is Vetseun? I'd like to follow him seeing as he has been so active on this thread. I also guess that he is a lot quicker than he pretends to be. Good luck Vettes!
  15. Capediver, looks very good. A quick question: any drama with bikes on Emirates? A group of us are going end August and want to pre-empt any potential problems
