  1. I wish to purchase a tandem in the USA and ship it to SA. The bike shop seems at a loss and my online searches render quotes ranging from US$500 to 3000! Anyone done it?, and any advice on how to do it cost effectively? Price of tandem is $900, so would not like to pay a fortune to get it to SA
  2. Can the bearing in the bottom bracket of a Giant ebike motor be replaced? Anyone near Knysna or in PE?
  3. I hope you are just being funny. I log ebike rides on Strava twice a week - have been doing so for over a year. It gives me no segments unless if I register my own under ebikes. eBikes are here to stay, and most definitely welcome on all our trails in Knysna and surrounds. By the way, I also ride some of the trails on our tandem - double the weight of anything you talk about here - have yet to see any additional damage to the trails.
  4. You guys think that tyres make a difference? I was on Spez Ground Control (with over 4000km on the clock), and felt like slipping a lot - but I thought it was just the wet leaves?
  5. That 2km after Anatomic was very slippery with all the leaves. Guy behind me came down just as we exitted the tunnel, then about 500m on I slipped and fell (sore skin burns...), then just after that two more guys in front of me came down. I wander how many people fell in that section. Great ride though - was me second.
  6. I am a bit confused....what is Optical HR? I have a Garmin Vivoactive HR which measures HR on my wrist. Have had it for 6 months now, am very active, and the HR readings are spot-on. I often use it together with my chest-strap monitor linked to my CycleOps trainer, and even sometimes together with my Edge520. Always the same.

Powemeter is a great tool for "directed" training - ie interval training etc. However, I have a powemeter (PowerTap on my MTB, and find it of little use - you can not watch your powermeter readings when you are riding offroad. So, in the end, you look at history and analise that. Now, on a stationery trainer, it's a different story all together- you plan your intervals and monitor it whilst you pedal. For that reason, I bought a trainer with a powermeter as well. Thàt I use regularly for improved training. The pm on my MTB is now basically just a gimmick - I like gimmicks though... As for your real question, my PowerTap is on the rear wheel - I find it very accurate, compared to the trainer. I can not comment on the benefits vs cranks though.
  8. The problem (challenge if you like) with meters on a tandem, is cable/wire length (if its wired). You just dont get wires long enough to run from the rear wheel to the bars. So you are pretty much forced to go wireless. As for dependability, like I said, I have both a road and a mtb tandem - did many k's with both - no problems (to date - touch wood). It's all down to decent components and regular service/attention. Have had a carbon fork on the Road bike for more than 10 years now, no problem. Broke chains on both - now I overspec on that.
  9. It took some time - but here it is. Took it for a spin around Red Barn yesterday, and I could just manage - wrists took a beating. Something to get used to.
  10. I have been riding tandems since 1999 - did 18 Argus' on a tandem to date. That is with a Canondale R1000 Road Tandem. Three years ago, I bought a Avalanche Envy Offroad Tandem - paid R15 000 (new) for it at the time. Did the KKK with it that year - 500km's offroad around George/Oudtshoorn etc. Last year we did the Sani2C with it, and this year we plan for the Trans Baviaans. It is a trong frame, fair groupsets and does not cost an arm and a leg. I strongly recommend this tandem - sourced through most dealers.
  11. I hope I am not out of sync here. Collecting numbers/seeding stickers is a pain. Why not all organisers share a central DB of participating stores (LBS') - eg restricted to one per suburb/small town. When you register, you select your preferred local/nearest LBS/Pickup Point, and numbers/stickers get couriered to those stores. Perhaps the stores can even pay a small fee to be on the list as it brings feet to the shop.
  12. Is your CSA membership paid up? Had the same situation, and it turned out that some of the team members' CSA was in arrears - even though they thought it was up to date. Soon as I sorted that out, registration went through in seconds.

  15. It is now 10 weeks since I broke my leg, and did the 947 yesterday, in same time as last year. Still limp when I walk (so no MTB yet), but somehow I pedal painlessly. Completing the 947 was a go/nogo point fot the upcoming Desert Dash, so, it's a GO! Just for interest sake, here is my recovery progress over the weeks: Week 1) Operation - 10 days after fracture 2) Went to gym - had cold fever for three consecutive days and eventually went to dr - turns out I started too soon and body/system was objecting. 3) Read books - lots.. 4) Light gym - rowing 5) 3x gym - rowing and 30 min "arm cycling" to recover cardio. Did normal weights with unaffected leg. 6) 3x gym; just more intense and longer than previous week, building up to 60 min cardio. 7) Started walking on moonboot with crutches and did first IDT - 30 min - bliss! 8) Dr confirmed leg has healed, start physio. Amazing how muscles have just disappeared! Start walking without moonboot, still with crutches though. Commence with IDT sessions without moonboot - less intensity, until I realise my mind is protecting the injured leg. Start counting on its downforce and thus consciously increasing its workload. 9) Serious IDT sessions and first time on the road - in the end I could not unclip and wife had to help with me leaning against a wall. Should have thought of that before. Really struggle to recover use of foot with basic physio, but by the end of the week, I start walking without crutches. Ancle swells a lot, so I start using compression socks. Did the 947 on IDT. 10) Start doing weights with damaged leg - can bear 60% of unaffeted leg, except for toe lifts - 10%. But it improves on daily basis. Normal weekly IDT and 947.
