Re gears - I spent some time in Germany during Sept and it seems many commuter bikes are fitted with some sort of internal hub, not unlike these, plus a front dynamo hub powering the cycle light.

Won't an accelerometer based speed sensor be better? (Or an MR Sensor) The V2 Garmin Speed Sensor can also cache measurements to a certain extend.
