  7. I'll try one more time... I am in no way blaming what happened on the e-bike team. We accept full responsibility for our unfortunate mistake. Neither am I bitter or angry towards the riders, they seemed like nice enough dudes and were careful when they did pass us and got far enough ahead that they didn't delay us on the technical descents. We only really saw them at checkpoints. I just pointed out that, unwittingly, them being ahead on the final sector may have affected our race outcome. In terms of the lead bike being with e-bikes - I must disagree. I spoke to Glen afterwards who said that he had never been so stressed on lead-bike duty, even with the pros on the Sani2c race. He said that the e-bikes go just as fast uphill as down making it really difficult and dangerous to be able to mark hazards, open gates, put down markers etc. He said he may have seen and removed the markers that caused us to go wrong if he weren't stressing about staying ahead. He mentioned that there would be some rule changes next year to try and avoid these types of issues. Separate day? Separate start time? Not sure. I suppose we will see next year.

  10. Ha ha. The e-bikes were out of sight. We debated it but remembered being told that markers overrule GPS. We decided to head up the climb and then felt vindicated when we saw a 2nd and 3rd marker further up. We all assumed we had to be right not imagining that another race would be using the same damn markers. Oh well. There is always next year.
  11. So... I now have an opinion on this topic. We rode Nonstop this past weekend and had a pair of e-bikes clearly racing us (for some reason). They managed to get past us on "day 3" and ended up crossing the finish line first. Because of this, Farmer Glen on the lead bike was with them instead of us. He said he could hardly keep up because they were gunning their little Bosch motors so hard. If it weren't for that, Glen would have been with us when we made our nav error 2km from home (we followed some identical markers apparently laid out by trail runners) that cost us the overall victory. I am not blaming them for our mistake, just noting that things could have been different if they behaved differently. I reckon e-bikes are welcome but they should stay the hell away from guys racing for real podiums.
  12. The long and the short of it is that this measure isn't good enough to guide training yet. We trialed HRV4 and were in contact with the developer. We do know that measures of HRV do change after hard training or racing but the nature and amplitude of change is too complex to spit out a number on what our training should be. The PMC is your best tool for monitoring load and subjective measures such as daily questionnaires (fatigue, muscle soreness, mood etc.) are actually superior to objective measures such as RHR.
